‘On Chesil Beach’ by Ian McEwan

The Independent has called it ‘wonderful…exquisite…devastating’. A friend of mine called it ‘ harrowing reading’.  I thought it highly disturbing.

Ian McEwan masters the description and narrative technique and his characters are created with scattered but firm brushes. The final result is an unsettling  and ironic picture of how awkward relationships can turn up to be and how little actions and misplaced words can determine our lives. Devastating, indeed!
